Standardized tests are a requirement for most colleges. You want to get the highest possible score, so you need to decide which test is right for you. Here are some of the differences between the SAT and the ACT.

Which Test Will It Be?

So you’ve decided to take a standardized test to increase your chances of getting into your dream college. You’ve got two options: the SAT or the ACT. Which one are you going to take? If you want to improve your odds of getting a high score, you need to pick the correct test. To help you decide which test to take, The Tutoring Center, Johns Creek GA has listed some of the differences between the SAT and the ACT.

The Duration

It can take you about three hours to complete the SAT, plus 50 minutes if you choose to complete the essay. The ACT, on the other hand, takes around two hours and 55 minutes, plus 35 more minutes if you answer the essay. The tests last pretty much the same amount of time, but the ACT is more fast-paced since it has more questions.

The Contents

The SAT is divided into four sections: Math, Reading, Writing and Language, and an optional essay. While the ACT is made up by five sections: Math, Reading, English, Science and Reasoning, and an optional essay.

The Essay

You’re not obligated to complete the essay on either test, but it’s highly recommended. The SAT essay requires you to read a text and prove that you understood it. The ACT essay requires that you evaluate and analyze a text and then use your critical thinking skills to create your argument.

Math and Science

The SAT’s Math section does not allow you to use a calculator. If your mental math skills are not so great, it's best to stick to the ACT. Now, the Science section on the ACT won’t test your scientific knowledge, but it will test your ability to think critically and analyze data. Not much of a critical thinker? Take the SAT instead.

The Location

There are test centers all over the country, but it’s possible that the one you need is not available in your town. You should consider the distance between your home and the nearest test center and whether you’re willing to travel for the exam or not.
