Helping Your Student to Improve Their Grades

Now is the time when your child’s report card is either in your hands or on its way out to you. If you believe that your child can achieve higher grades than what is shown, below is an article from The Tutoring Center, Johns Creek which can help.

Find the Root Cause

Despite your knee-jerk reaction, low grades aren’t always the result of a child who doesn’t pay attention in class or isn’t interested in their learning. The first step is to sit and have a comfortable chat with your child, potentially over a snack, and discuss what’s causing their lower-than-expected grades. There can be a range of causes, including:
  • They don’t have enough time to complete their homework.
  • Your student wasn’t prepared for the increase in lesson complexity.
  • They struggle to take sufficient notes during class time.
  • Your child needs additional learning tools.
Whatever the cause is, be receptive to it and work together to overcome it. Continuing with the examples above:
  • Help them to rearrange their study and social schedule to allow more homework time.
  • Look for additional learning resources or provide more homework help.
  • Teach them how to take notes faster and more efficiently.
  • Provide whatever tools they are lacking.
Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list. Whatever the cause is, be open to addressing it. You won’t get any positive results from simply becoming frustrated or angry about low grades.

Is Additional Help Required?

It can often be difficult for many students to adjust to more complex lessons. While for some students it can be a natural progression, many more struggle. But this doesn’t mean they don’t want to ace their lessons! Look for additional resources:
  • Enroll them in group study sessions in your area where they can learn informally from their peers.
  • Look for reading materials or textbooks which present the lessons in different ways.
  • Formal tutoring can be a great way to boost your child’s grades and help them understand their classes.
